Hello friends of the pagan/wiccan/witchcraft community, can you suggest any craft ideas? I want to make some stuff for my altar, but I can’t afford to buy the expensive materials from new age shops. :(

First stop: dollar store and goodwill (or a similar thrift store). You can get cheap candle holders, little boxes, and offering bowls. You can even find bottles and jars. Sometimes thrift stores have nice framed paintings and little statues. Also look for vases to put flowers in, incense trays, placemats that you can use as altar cloths, ect. You can find something kind of like you want, stick a new paint job on it or some paper mâché decorations, and have the perfect piece for a couple bucks.

Second stop: paper mâché and polymer clay. Super easy and cost effective ways to sculpt anything and everything. Make statues, bowls, decorate plain candle holders, ect. You can also experiment with cinnamon clay, cornstarch clay, and air dry porcelain. Look up tutorials online.

Third stop: the outdoors. Find pine cones, dry wood for wands or knife handles, get creative. Get some dirt or sand, put it in a bowl, and stick some incense stick in it. Instant incense holder. The dirt will also hold the heat from charcoal discs to burn loose incense.

Final stop: craft stores. Fabric remnants for altar cloths and pouches, silk flowers, and whatever else you need to put the finishing touches on your altar.

Re wicking and recycling one of my favorite candles.

  1. its super easy and quick. all you need is a piece of cotton string. the metal piece to hold the wick
  2. (i save mine from old tea lights, i then just remove the old wick and poke a new wick through the little metal thing)
  3. once you have this  you just tie the wick to something not flammable so it stays in place.
  4. now that your all set up you just stick it on the stove top until it all melts.
  5. then you just turn off the heat and let it sit until the wax is solidified and the container is no longer to hot to touch.
  6. now you have a new candle from one of your old one.

if you are doing this with a glass candle  bring up the heat slowly so that the glass doesn’t shatter or break.

also this is a great way to customize store bought basic candles. that way if you need a fancy candle you can make it rather than spend money on something that is expensive and your only going to use once.  once the wax is liquified you can add ground up herbs, scents or resins.  and once its solid if you have any unused crayons or candles you can drip the wax onto for added decoration
